~Jess

Tuesday, February 11, 2003

Before I talk about my day I just want to say that I am so mad at Joe Millionaire! They absolutely conned everyone into watching tonight! The writers had it set up for Evan to pick either Sarah or Zora...but what happened? It was a lousy re-run of everything that had previously happened on all their dates...incredibly boring. So now I will most certainly be watching the two hour season finale with a "remarkable twist." This whole obsession I have with Joe Millionaire is kind of funny considering I'm currently writing a satire on mindless television reality show crap.

Today was an alright day. I love having ping pong first period...it relaxes me and puts me in a good mood for the day. I love competing and playing games put today I just rallied with Naomi and Benet. Tomorrow I'm playing Mr. C, it should be an exciting game. I hope I win...but who doesn't want to win? I didn't pay attention in chemistry today. It was all review on gas laws for a test on Wednesday so I did my test corrections for U.S instead. U.S was good today, I like how Mr. DeBiasse finds ways to connect WWI to the war with Iraq. We have a propaganda assignment due on Friday. I think I'm going to draw a religious poster that appeals to the 'Josiah Strong' type. It will say something about being a just war (there are certain standards set by the church) and then put some sort of bible quote, maybe one with Simon. My hand fell off in Euro today. I'm tempted not to take notes, but I'm afraid if I didn't take notes I wouldn't pay attention because Boni has a pretty monotonous voice. He said something funny about the french revolution and mullets today that made me laugh though. Benet and I went to my house for lunch...she did some english thing and I wrote my application for a newspaper editorial position for next year. I'd like to be editor in chief, but I suppose I'd be pleased with any editorial position. In journalism, Scott and I discussed my satire and developed a vehicle to deliver it on. I keep forgetting that to apply for AP english I need to hand in a peace of analytical writing, but the problem is I don't have one! I didn't do anything worthwhile last year with Mr. Lombardo (ask Scott or Jason), I didn't write anything analytical freshman year, and so far nothing analytical in journalism. I would like to hand in a DBQ, but the criterial calls for it to be a literary analysis...basically I'm screwed. Pre-calc was boring, but Dan and Kyle keep me amused. Eismann definitely holds something against them. He made them move to the front and center of the room today for no reason...I'm going to miss their jokes but Ross and I will get by.

After school Katie called me and asked me to work for her, so since I'm broke and had nothing better to do I agreed. It wasn't bad, I made $55 working from 4 to 9. My boss usually irritates me, but I guess since I hadn't seen him in a while we didn't fight at all today. For anyone who reads this...understand that waitresses work purely for tips (I only get paid $2.13/hr) so please be generous to them!

Another snow day this week would be awesome. I can't believe I have four tests this week...two of them (Boni and DeBiasse) are two-day tests! I think Mr. Boni is going to make the test on the enlightenment and french revolution extremely difficult and ask some trivial multiple choice questions that I will undoubtedly get wrong. He definitely wants to make sure these "second semester seniors" stay on task. I guess I have them to thank if I do poorly...

Okay, finally time to finish the homework that I do have today. Goodnight.

Saturday, February 08, 2003

I don't remember being told this morning that it was a snow day. I stayed awake Thursday night doing homework, apparently for no reason. Anyway, I finally fell asleep at about quarter to three and then slept until noon. I had no urge to get out of bed. My flanel sheets and comforter are extremely warm compared to the frigid temperature my Mom keeps the house at. Eventually I dragged myself out of bed and shoveled snow.

I was supposed to go car shopping today but unfortunately it was postponed. While driving to route 22 my Mom starting experiencing chest pains. Last week she had laryngitis, but since then she regained her voice. Nonetheless, she continued to experience inflamation causing an airway obstruction, and a terrible dry cough. I told her I thought she had pertussis but she refused to seek extra medical attention. Finally she agreed to let me take her to the hospital. She receved chest x-rays and lots of medicine and some acetaminophen to relieve discomfort. She was discharged, surprisingly after only short two hours, with a perscription for tylonal III and some sort of inhaler.

I love the enviornment of hospitals. From a young age I've been exposed to them, whether it was visiting my Mom at work in the E.R. or going for some trauma of my own. It is set in my mind that I am going to become an E.R. doctor, pediatricians are entirely too boring. I love the intensity of the emergency room; never knowing who your next patient will be, the severity of their trauma, or how you will remedy them. It will be a wonderful adrenaline rush. I will gain new knowledge and feel satisfied at the end of each day. Sitting behind a desk or performing the same task each day is something I will never do.

I do not know when I will get married and have kids. My job will be so time consuming that I cannot see myself juggling both. Of couse I want a husband and a few kids but that will come later in life. Maybe I'll get married around 27 but will not have kids until 32.

With war surfacing I've begun to ponder what my role will be. It seems as though after the events of September 11 the country united and was so patriotic. However, I get the feeling that all these people who radiate their "pride" are unwillng to fight for their flag. I for one, am anxious to be called the second greatest generation (next to those who faught in WWII) and serve my country. I do not foresee this war as being a short one so I would like to first finish my education. After I graduate medical school I would like to be an army medical doctor and treat American soldiers overseas. I am not afraid of dying. If I died while performing a service for my country I woud be proud and hopefully an inspiration. Maybe my name would even appear in text books as one of the greatest military doctors who gave the ultimate sacrifice for her country. That would be extremely gratifying.
